ISAJE/WHO YOUNG SCHOLARS AWARD 2008
The award scheme aims to provide recognition for the contributions
to addiction science of young scholars from developing countries
and to promote their involvement in the field.
The award is for the best published paper on
any topic related to addiction written by a young scholar
from a low or middle income country. The successful applicant
will receive a certificate and financial support to attend
an international scientific or clinical meeting, to be chosen
by the winner in consultation with ISAJE.
To be eligible, the paper must have been published
either online or in print form in a peer-reviewed scholarly
journal between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008. The research
reported should have been carried out predominantly in a low
or middle income country, as specified by the World Bank classification.
Applicants must be less than 35 years old and should be the
lead author in the paper being submitted for the award. They
should hold a current academic or research position in a low
or middle income country; or should have held such a position
at the time the research for the paper was carried out.

1. Purpose
The SSA shall award a maximum of £2,500
to support any younger member of the Society to travel to
international meetings, and/or laboratories and/or clinics,
to further their training. This amount will be awarded twice
a year, in March and October.
How it works:
Before the conference/laboratory/clinic
visit:
a) You submit your application to SSA with
a letter of support from your supervisor, details of the
visit etc, and a budget;
b) SSA considers funding request twice a year in March &
October, and will let you know if you have been successful
as soon as possible thereafter;
After the conference/laboratory/clinic
visit:
c) If you are successful in your application,
you go to your conference etc and then submit to the SSA
a report and details of the expenses you would like to be
funded, including receipts;
d) SSA will then reimburse you.
2. Eligibility/Selection Criteria
A younger member is defined as one younger
than 40 years and not more than 5 years post-doctoral. Preference
will be given to applicants who:
e) are giving a presentation at the meeting
they wish to attend;
f) will combine their attendance at the meeting with a visit(s)
to a laboratory(ies) and/or clinic(s) and/or to meeting
with an expert associated with their field of addiction;
g) are active members of the SSA as evidenced by attendance
at the Annual Scientific meeting.
3. To apply
Send 4 (four) copies of your application form

Please attach:
1 - *Letter from tutor/line manager (preferably
a member of the SSA) to confirm organisational support of
the proposed study activity. This is essential to the processing
of the application
2 - Full expected budget
3 - Letter of confirmation from employing
authority that study leave will be granted if application
is successful
4 - Copy of submitted abstract
5 - Supporting statement from proposed host
centre (including letter of invitation where appropriate)
6 - Brief CV, highlighting degrees, awards
& publications
Successful applicants must submit a report to
the SSA after the event (at the above address), with details
of the expenses they would like refunded, including receipts.
*This letter should show:
- The benefit to the applicant or organisation;
- The employers position regarding funding;
- Support for the time required to undertake
the visit and associated work;
- An opinion of the applicants ability
to complete the activity
4. Selection Panel
A panel comprising three members of the
Executive Council shall be convened to rank the applicants
using the above criteria. If any member of the panel is unavailable,
the Council of the SSA may co-opt another member of the Executive
to the panel.
5. Successful applicants must submit
a report to the SSA after the event (at the above address),
with details of the expenses they would like refunded, including
receipts.
