Professor Michael Russell was a towering figure
in the smoking cessation field, and it is sometimes forgotten
that he also did a session in the alcohol clinic at the Maudsley
hospital for many years. Patients and practitioners with whom
he worked remember him as a kind and compassionate clinician.
His entries in case notes were exemplary. Concise, beautifully
written in neat handwriting, they managed to capture the essence
of the person and the alcohol problem.
He gave a key-note address, 'A personal view
of the application of research findings to policy formation',
at the SSA Symposium in 1999, and was made an Honorary Fellow
in the same year.
