The SSA conference in November 2021 featured a session in memory of Professor Malcolm Lader OBE. Watch the series of talks and follow-up Q&A, which focus on benzodiazepines – an area of study Professor Lader made inestimable contributions to during his career.
Professor Malcolm Lader OBE was president of the Society for the Study of Addiction for 10 years, from 1982 to 1992, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Academy of Medical Sciences, vice-president of the International College of Psychopharmacology, a member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, chair of the Technical Committee, and a founding editor of the journal Biological Psychology.
He was world renowned for his research on benzodiazepines when they were being promoted as a harm-free alternative to barbiturates, and his work on dependence and withdrawal from benzodiazepine drugs still informs clinical practice and research today.
In the video below, recorded at the SSA’s 2021 Annual Conference, Professor David Baldwin reflects on the life and contributions of Professor Malcolm Lader, who in his words was “a towering figure in British psychopharmacology”.
