St George’s Medical School (University of London) and the SSA produced a user-friendly set of factsheets to help integrate knowledge of substance use into the undergraduate medical curriculum. This factsheet examines assessment and screening tools for substance use. After reading the factsheet, medical students will understand:

  • how to undertake an assessment for substance use
  • the range of tools available to screen and assess drinking and drug use
  • what tests and investigations are useful for diagnostic purposes
  • how to make a diagnosis of substance dependence (addiction)
