The SSA is announcing the launch of a new lived experience panel – creating dedicated opportunities for people affected by addiction to help shape the future of addiction science in the UK.

People with lived experience are already part of the addiction science community. However, the SSA has identified a need for more frequent and dedicated opportunities for people with lived or living experience to contribute to decision-making.

What is the purpose of the panel?

The new panel will provide a formal route for people with lived or living experience of addiction (including family members and carers) to:

  • offer feedback on SSA policies, procedures, and funding schemes
  • contribute to the development of events and conferences
  • identify gaps, assumptions, and areas for improvement in research
  • challenge stigma and misconceptions around addiction

Panel members will also have opportunities to contribute to SSA subcommittees, helping to ensure lived experience perspectives are represented across the organisation’s governance and activities.

How will the panel work?

The lived experience panel will meet online three times per year as a full group, with additional subcommittee meetings taking place every four to six weeks.

Members will be asked to prepare for meetings by reviewing documents and contributing their perspectives during discussions. They will also play a role in sharing insights between the panel and wider SSA structures.

Participation is open to people across the UK with direct or indirect experience of addiction, including those supporting friends or family members. Panel members do not need to be abstinent or in recovery to take part.

Panel members will be paid for their time in line with national guidance, and reasonable expenses will be covered.

If you have lived or living experience of addiction and would like to contribute to the SSA’s work, please consider joining the lived experience panel. The deadline for applying is 26 May. If you have any questions, would like to discuss this opportunity, or would like support with your application, you can contact the SSA team via the enquiry form.
