The SSA’s Annual Conference is the UK’s foremost gathering of addiction researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and experts by experience. The 2024 conference will be held in Newcastle upon Tyne on 14 and 15 November. Apply by 3 July for your chance to give an oral or a poster presentation at the conference.

What do I need to know before applying?

We will ask you to include an abstract that describes the scope of your presentation. It should be a maximum of 1,500 characters (approximately 250 words) and feature the following headings: background/aims; methods; results; and conclusions. If you are unsure whether you will have data or conclusions by the time of the conference, please use the application form to describe what you will present in place of those data or conclusions.

We will aim to notify you about whether your application has been successful by Friday 16 August. We will then ask you to confirm your attendance at the conference by booking your place no later than Friday 4 October.

If you apply for an oral presentation and are not successful on this occasion, we may invite you to present a poster at the conference.

What can I expect if my application is successful?

We will ask you to provide a short biography and profile picture that we can use to publicise the conference (e.g. on the website, in the conference programme, and on social media).

If you are giving an oral presentation, you will be allocated to a session in the conference programme based on the theme of your presentation. You will have approximately 15 minutes to present and will also have the opportunity to answer questions from the audience at the end of the session.

If you are giving a poster presentation, you will be allocated to a dedicated poster session. This is an opportunity for you to talk to people about your research. Your poster should be A1 size and portrait orientation to ensure that it fits on the display boards.
