The SSA president, Dr Ed Day, has completed his first report as the UK government Drug Recovery Champion. The report outlines progress he has made in the past year and outlines future work and priorities.

The report focuses on the importance of creating a Recovery Orientated System of Care (ROSC) built collaboratively with ‘professionals by training’ and ‘professionals by experience’. Dr Day  emphasises the importance of helping people develop meaningful lives, looking beyond the initial aims of helping people control their substance use.

The report also summarises the wide consultation that Dr Day has undertaken over the past 12 months. A consultation that has adapted to, and reported on, the changes in treatment services due to COVID-19 and associated lock-down measures. Over this time, he has established several groups to ensure that the experiences of people who use treatment services are included in treatment and policy decisions.

The report outlines current issues of concern relating to the addiction treatment workforce and details Dr Day’s aspirations for establishing a UK Addiction Recovery Research Institute
