Biography
Dr Andres Roman-Urrestarazu, BM MSc MD PhD MFPH, is a psychiatrist, public health researcher, and health economist, and the Group Leader of the Mental Health | Policy | Economics Research Group at the University of Cambridge. He is also Lancet Commission Lead on Problematic use of the Internet. His work focuses on the intersection of health policy, economics, and public mental health, with particular emphasis on health inequalities and digital-environment risks. He is also an Assistant Professor in International Health at Maastricht University, a Gillings Fellow in Autism Research and Global Public Health at Cambridge, and an Affiliated Researcher at the Bennett Institute for Public Policy. He has held major international fellowships, including the UK Harkness Fellowship at Stanford University, and has worked with organisations such as NICE, WHO Europe, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Abstract
Policy mapping for problematic use of the internet
Andres will present a global policy mapping analysis on the regulation of problematic internet use, including digital gambling. Drawing on comparative epidemiological and policy data, this contribution highlights major international disparities, regulatory innovations, and persistent challenges in addressing digital environment risks. Insights will be provided on how different countries conceptualise and govern online behavioural addictions, with implications for UK and global policy development.
