The SSA is now accepting applications for two bursaries, which aim to strengthen the field by investing in both future research leadership and the treatment workforce.

The SSA’s research leadership bursaries and treatment workforce bursaries are designed to support further study in the field of addiction (e.g. master’s degrees, diplomas, certificates, and modular courses).

Research leadership bursary

The research leadership bursary, awarded through the Addiction Healthcare Goals flagship research leadership programme, is open to a broad range of applicants across the addiction field, including those working in research, policy, practice, and treatment.

It offers full funding, with no maximum award, and is designed to support people who want to develop as research leaders. This could mean leading academic research, but also include  influencing or applying research within policy or clinical settings.

Applicants will need to demonstrate how their proposed study will support their development as a research leader and contribute to the wider field. The bursary would be well suited to full-time study, particularly for those looking to take a more intensive step into research.

Treatment workforce bursary

The treatment workforce bursary is specifically for people working in addiction treatment services. It provides funding of up to £7,000 per year and is typically used to support part-time study alongside work. Applicants can apply for funding across multiple years but must re-apply each year.

As a charitable scheme, the bursary is designed to support those who may not otherwise be able to access further study. Applicants are therefore asked to demonstrate financial need, alongside the relevance of their chosen course to their role in treatment services.

Can I apply for both?

The schemes are distinct but complementary and are designed to support different types of impact in the field of addiction. Some applicants, particularly those working in treatment services who are also interested in developing research skills, may be eligible to apply for both bursaries.

You can apply for a research leadership bursary and/or treatment workforce bursary using the online form. There is no deadline; applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all funds are allocated. If you have any questions or need assistance with your application, please contact the SSA team at enquiries@addiction-ssa.org.
