Applications are now open for funding to support special interest groups and events that aim to drive innovative responses to addiction to illicit drugs and alcohol. Apply for up to £10,000 by 14 January 2027.

The SSA is launching funding for special interest groups and events and through the Addiction Healthcare Goals flagship research leadership programme. The SSA can provide up to £10,000 over a minimum of two years to help establish a special interest group, support an existing special interest group, or organise an event around an area of specific interest.

What are special interest groups?

Special interest groups draw on the strengths and insights of different people to develop responses to problems. They might develop new research collaborations, produce standards for research or treatment, or identify ways to put research findings into practice.

Every funded group or event should be multidisciplinary – bringing together people working across research, policy, and treatment, alongside people with lived experience of addiction.

Who can apply?

This funding round supports groups focused on alcohol and illicit drugs. Groups primarily concerned with tobacco or behavioural addictions will not be eligible.

The lead applicant must be resident in the UK and based within an organisation that can provide appropriate governance for the group. Groups should include members from more than one UK nation and at least one person with lived experience of addiction.

Applications will be assessed primarily on their potential impact. Applicants should explain what their group hopes to achieve, who will be involved, and how they will share their work.

How to apply

The closing date for applications is 14 January 2027. Read the eligibility criteria and apply online.

If you have questions about your eligibility or the application process, please contact the SSA team via the enquiry form. If you require reasonable adjustments or assistance to complete the application, please contact Graham Hunt.
