Applications are now open for PhD studentships and fellowships in addiction science. Find out how to apply below.
The Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA) has been championing addiction science for 140 years. We are the largest addiction-only funder in the UK – providing financial support to researchers at key stages of their career development, including through master’s bursaries, pre- and post-doctoral support, PhD studentships, and fellowships.
We are currently inviting applications for PhD studentships and fellowships. If you have an idea that will advance the scientific understanding of addiction, and the use of this knowledge in policy and practice, please consider applying. In this round of funding, there are no limitations on the type of method, approach, population, or type of addiction in your research.
PhD funding
The purpose of a PhD is to advance knowledge within a specific field. During the course of a PhD, you will design and conduct your own research, write a thesis, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and ultimately become a subject-matter expert.
SSA-funded PhD studentships include:
- A stipend of £20,780 per year (£22,780 with London weighting)
- Up to £5,006 per year towards tuition fees
- Up to £5,000 across the PhD for research and training costs
If you are applying for a PhD studentship in Spring 2026, the SSA will consider you for two targeted funding opportunities:
- PhD studentship through the Addiction Healthcare Goals flagship research leadership programme, designed to support research and impact on alcohol and drug treatment, recovery, and reduction of addiction-related harms
- PhD studentship in alcohol and mental health, made possible through the trust of Martin Raynes
The closing date for all PhD studentship applications is 30 July 2026. Read more and apply online.
Fellowship funding
The purpose of a fellowship is to shape your own research agenda. During the course of a fellowship, you will lead a programme of research, lead grant applications, and supervise junior researchers.
SSA-funded fellowships include:
- A salary, typically ranging from £35,000 to £50,000
- Up to £30,000 across the fellowship for research and training costs
If you are applying for a fellowship in Spring 2026, the SSA will consider you for the Addiction Healthcare Goals flagship research leadership programme. Fellowships through this special scheme are designed to support research and impact on alcohol and drug treatment, recovery, and reduction of addiction-related harms.
The closing date for fellowship applications is 30 July 2026. Read more and apply online.
About the flagship research leadership programme

In 2025, the SSA was proud to be tasked with delivering the Addiction Healthcare Goals flagship research leadership programme. This programme is funded by the UK Government’s Office for Life Sciences, and aims to support projects that drive innovative responses to addiction to illicit drugs and alcohol, and develop the next generation of leaders in addiction science.
To be eligible for the programme, applicants should demonstrate that their research will have an impact on addiction treatment, recovery, or reduction of addiction-related harms in the areas of alcohol or illicit drugs.
Applications are particularly welcomed from people living in Wales or Northern Ireland, and from those wishing to combine research with clinical practice (e.g. nurses, midwives, pharmacists, doctors, and dentists). People who work in registered professions and would like to continue with clinical work for up to 20% of their PhD or fellowship can apply for funding to cover their full salary costs.
