Dr Nora Volkow is Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and is giving the society lecture at this year’s SSA conference. In this interview with Dr Sally Marlow from 2019’s Women in Addiction series, Dr Volkow talks about viewing addiction as a disease with important social and environmental components and about the importance of being less categorical about how we define addiction.
From her experience working in NIDA Dr Volkow talks about the interaction between knowledge and policy and the importance of providing compelling evidence to policy makers to bring about change.
Dr Volkow then talks about some of the challenges that face women in addiction research settings, and how important it is to never give up.
