Welcome to week seven of the qualitative methods conference series.
This is the third lecture of the series. Dr Caitlin Notley talks about the ECtra study that explored the perceptions of people using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. The lecture covers the research team’s use of photo elicitation, Thematic Analysis, Iterative Categorisation, and ethnography. Caitlin also demonstrates, through worked examples, how the team organised the data into a hierarchy of themes and how they used software to create visual pathways representing participants’ transitions towards abstinence from smoking.
An interesting note, considering that the study took place before the COVID-19 pandemic, is that Caitlin discusses how the research team translated the qualitative topic guide – that was initially intended for face-to-face interviews – into a form that could be completed online.
